How Social Networks Diminish Legal Rights

r Sponsor: Continuing Legal Education r r r Lori Andrews, Professor at Kent"When octuplets are born in Houston, when a dead man fathers a baby in Los Angeles, when ‘twins’ of different races are born after a medical mix-up in Manhattan, whom are you going to call? Lori Andrews definitely is on the short list," says USA Today.Lori works on the edge of new technology. She’s advised companies, politicians, and consumers around the world about the personal and social impacts of genetic technologies, reproductive technologies, and nanotechnologies. Now she’s focusing on how social networks are changing our lives, for good and ill. She started her consumer activism when she was seven and her Ken doll went bald. Her letter to Mattel got action. She’s been fighting for people’s rights ever since.Lori is the author of ten non-fiction books and three novels. She frequently appears on television, including on 60 Minutes, Good Morning America, and Nightline. She has written for publications that include Playboy, Parade, New York, Vogue, Glamour, Self, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, and Psychology Today. The American Bar Association Journal calls Lori "a lawyer with a literary bent who has the scientific chops to rival any CSI investigator." In her current project, she is writing a Constitution covering social networks. r r CLE credits: 1 Event Url http://calendar.law.upenn.edu//EventDetails.aspx?data=hHr80o3M7J6Q1HvxNvCRlfBKofacLtUAg0eZFj3j%2bPA%3d

Cozen Professor of Law, University of Pennsylvania Law Schoolr r Corruption in Asia: Law & Governance, Corporate Responsibility, and Mediar The traditional model of anti-corruption enforcement, based on domestic regulations and enforced by a nation’s judiciary or other special agencies, faces numerous challenges in the Asian context. Where the independence of the judiciary and even-handed application of the laws is in doubt—especially in new democracies or autocracies—reliance on law and governance methods alone has been thought insufficient. The increasingly global economy and necessity for trans-national cooperation further complicate this picture, and also imply that these local matters have become questions of global significance. The internet and social media, as well as more traditional media, may play a greater role in shedding light on abuse and acting as a check on power. This symposium will explore how these non-state actors, specifically corporates, media, and other societal institutions deal with government corruption and its own corruption in East and Southeast Asia. Gonzales, PhD, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health and Society Scholar,University of PennsylvaniaThe Effects of Social Media Use on Mental and Physical HealthSocial media is used by the majority of Americans on a daily basis. What are the health implications for these practices? Amy Gonzales, a researcher at the Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society scholar program, will present data on the ways in which everyday social media (e.g. cellphones, texting, Facebook, etc.) may influence mental and physical health. She’ll also describe new technologies that have been designed to change health behaviors and improve health, including eating behaviors in children or social interactions in low-income neighborhoods. Lyle H. Ungar, PhD, Associate Professor of Computer and Information Science (CIS) at the Universityof Pennsylvania; also holds appointments in various other departments inthe Schools of Engineering and Applied Science, Business, and MedicineEstimating well-being from Tweets and Facebook PostsThe words people use on social media such as Twitter and Facebook are a rich, if imperfect, source of information about their personality and psychological state. This talk will give an introduction to recent work in estimating subjective well-being from social media word use, focusing on an effort at Penn to use tweets and Facebook posts to characterize variations in PERMA (positive emotion, engagement, meaning, and accomplishment) overtime and location. These estimates of psychological states correlate significantly with a variety of health outcomes as measured by Gallup polls and the CDC.Joint work with Andy Schwartz, Johannes Eichstaedt, Peggy Kern, Stephanie Ramones, Lukasz Dziurzynski and Martin Seligman  RSVP:  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_US&formkey=dG9ZZkw1ODUwaDdpMUtFR1ZyZkhGdkE6MQ#gid=0
